Why Solid Ground?

What is different about Solid Ground Counseling Center?

At its foundation Solid Ground is a place of love and hope. Life can be challenging, ugly, and difficult to navigate. In these tough times we typically feel unloved, alone, unseen, and hopeless. The work done at Solid Ground is intended to help clients see they’re not alone, to refocus clients’ minds on their strengths, and to facilitate emotional healing.

But how do I do that?

A core belief at Solid Ground is that, in order for a person to cultivate any positive change of circumstances in life, one must feel loved. This is achieved by seeing each client as a unique person. Using an individualized treatment plan designed specifically for each client, therapeutic work conducted at Solid Ground should invigorate the client and flood hope into their life. From this place of love and hope, the client can take on the challenge of directing positive growth in their life.

Positive growth? What exactly does that mean?

Growth looks different for everyone. Each circumstance is different, and thus must be treated as such. Positive growth is that which moves the client in a positive direction, towards a place of healthier functioning. Since therapy is a deeply personal journey, the client should ultimately be in charge of what that journey looks like. While there will certainly be therapeutic input, the course of life is lived by the client, and thus should be chosen by the client. Therapy will be a collaborative (joint) effort between client and therapist to create a realistic, desirable outcome that works best for the client.

Therapy Modalities

At Solid Ground each client can expect a treatment plan tailored to their needs. The following therapy models are frequently used in developing treatment plans.

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)

EFT is an evidence-based treatment method with successful clinical outcomes. Techniques from this therapy method focus on targeting the emotional injuries that have happened in relationships. Throughout the course of treatment, these injuries will be addressed and new opportunities for healthier interactions will be presented. New interactions have the capability to rewrite old emotional injuries and create new emotional experiences. This method is used with couples as well as individuals.

Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)

If you struggle with parenting your young child, this therapy method may be for you. PCIT is conducted through “coaching” sessions during which you and your child are in a playroom while the therapist is in an observation room watching you interact with your child through a one-way mirror and/or live video feed. You wear a “bug-in-the-ear” device through which the therapist provides in-the-moment coaching on skills you are learning to manage your child’s behavior. While strengthening the relationship, this therapy method helps reduce problem behavior and increase positive parent-child interactions.

The Gottman Method

A scientifically validated method of couples therapy, The Gottman Method disarms conflicting verbal communication, removes barriers that create a feeling of stagnancy in conflicting situations, and creates a heightened sense of empathy and understanding within the context of the relationship. Another goal of Gottman Method Couples is intimacy, respect, and affection. The Gottman Method is designed to support couples across all economic, racial, sexual orientation, and cultural sectors. Outcome research has shown Gottman Method Couples Therapy to be effective for treating heterosexual and homosexual relationships alike.

PREPARE/ENRICH

This is not a therapy method as much as a couple strengthening program. PREPARE/ENRICH is a global couple assessment that gathers information from an in-depth questionnaire taken by both individuals in the relationship. Providing feedback across 10 content areas, this assessment is designed to show couples where their strengths and growth areas are, using practical exercises to help couples build their relationship. This program is suitable for both pre-marital and married couples and has variations to accommodate faith, parental status, and even foster/adopting families!

*This list is not exhaustive. Since treatment is tailored to each client, interventions may be used from different treatment models.
